Life Size Zoo - Books I Got For My Kid

My wife came across this series of books that have pictures of the animals which unfold to life sizes.
As my kid love animals and love to read. These books would be a great addition for our library.

However, getting the books from within Singapore are really expensive. Each book cost almost $40 dollars! An so i turn to amazon. Just around $12 - $13 USD per book! that works out to be less than $20 SGD. And with vPOSTUSA shipping the books into Singapore will take only about a week. And so i decided to buy more copies for friends and family, averaging out the shipping cost on the books will save more money than buying them in Singapore!

Each book cost around $13 USD = $16.90 SGD
Shipping for each book cost $6.99 SGD so total cost me = $6.99 + 16.90 = $23.89
Per shipping of books cost $8.99 so total for 7 books is 23.89 X 7 + 8.99 = SGD 176.22
Average out across 7 books, each book only cost me 176.22 / 7 = SGD $25.20
This is more than $10 savings off the price per book i can get off Singapore's book store!

Three schools are awarded both the pinnacle School Excellence Award for educational excellence and the Best Practice Award for Student All Round Development for holistic development of their students under the Ministry of Education (MOE) Masterplan of Awards (MoA)¹ 2010. The three schools are St. Hilda's Primary, Chung Cheng High (Main) and Dunman Secondary. In addition to the two awards, Dunman Secondary is also conferred the Outstanding Development Award for Character Development this year. A total of 225 schools will receive 467 Special²and Level Two³ Awards under the MoA. SINGAPOREANS sometimes assume that since I'm a white guy, I don't cane my kids.

I do.

I'm not proud of the fact, but neither am I particularly ashamed - I file it under "You gotta do what you gotta do."

When my youngest son Skyler was still a toddler, he had a problem with biting.

Well, actually, HE didn't have a problem. He bit just fine.

It was the people he bit who had the problem.

One night while my wife and I were getting the kids ready for bed, Skyler bit his big brother Jet on the arm.

He filed it under "When diplomacy fails."

But I was having none of it.

I got the cane from the next room, and then returned to the kids' bedroom.

"Skyler," I said, "do you want to bite Jet again?"

My adorable little angel nodded his head, a beatific grin on his face.

Then he went in for the kill.

And I whacked him.

P1 exams to be abolished by 2013

There will be no exams for primary one students across the nation by
2013. That is the target put forth by the Ministry of Education for all
primary schools, reported the Straits Times.

The implementation follows positive feedback received from 16 schools
that participated in the pilot programme for the new learning methods to
support students' learning and development.

Secondary One Posting

Posting exercise will be carried out by Pupil Placement Section of Ministry of Education from late November through December.

Posting will be dependent on the student's PSLE results.

There Secondary One (S1) Option exercise for parents to submit the secondary schools preferred. The S1 option exercise can be done either via internet or physically at the child's primary school. The option allows parents and child to indicate up to six (6) secondary schools that they would like to opt for.

Before the submission:
1. Parents are advised to go through the booklet on "Choosing Your Secondary Schools"
2. There are several decisions to be made based on the following:
a. Previous year’s posting aggregate ranges of the schools
b. Academic performance of the child
c. Distance
d. Affiliated schools
e. Programmes and schemes offered
f. Special needs of the child
Each of the six items are described in greater details here

For online submission. Check out the information Secondary One Internet System. The online submission is successful when a Verification slip is generated with the confirmation number. Parents should print and keep a copy for their reference.

For physical submission at the primary school. Parents need to fill in the hard copy of the S1 options form. The staffs at the primary school will help to enter the options and when that is done, a Verification Slip will be issued. Parents should double check the options that is entered and notify the staff immediately if there is any error or discrepancies.

However, a statement of results can be requested at a fee of $10.00

PHASE	Description
1	For a child who has a sibling studying in a school of choice. All children registered under this phase will be given places in schools.
2A1	For a child whose parent is a former student of the school and who has joined the alumni association as a member not later than 30 Jun 2008; or whose parent is a member of the School Advisory/Management Committee.
2A2	For a child whose parent or sibling has studied in the school of choice; or whose parent is a staff member of the school of choice.
2B2	For a child whose parent has joined the school as a parent volunteer not later than 1 July 2008 and has given at least 40 hours of voluntary service to the school by 30 June 2009; or whose parent is a member endorsed by the church/clan directly connected with the school; or whose parent is endorsed as an active community leader.
2C	For a child who is ineligible for or unsuccessful in earlier phases.
2C Supplementary	For a child who is unsuccessful in gaining a place in a school of choice at Phase 2C.

Should the number of applications exceed the number of vacancies in any phase, places will be balloted according to the following order of priority:

1. Children living within 1 km of the school of choice.
2. Children living between 1 km and 2 km of the school of choice.
3. Children living outside 2 km of the school of choice.

MOE Awards Information

MOE have a Masterplan of Award (MoA). SEA (School Excellence Award) is the most prestigious award, and is only awarded to one school.

The awards serve as milestone checks to guide schools on their journey to excellennce by providinng a systematic and progressive framework to chart progress through self-assessment benchmarking and continuous improvement. The award covers several categories in both academic excellence and non-academic areas. The awards are introduced in 2004 to replace school ranking, highlighting achievement in academic value add and non-academic domains. The provide a broader and more complete picture of schools' performannce.

Level 1 awards are given to school for achivement in a single year. Level 2 awards are given for sustained achievement in the particular domain. Special awards (School Distinction Award and School Excellence Award) are given for holistic efforts in establishing outstanding educational processes and obtaining excellent outcomes.

Sustain Achievement Award (SAA) is a level 2 award and it recognises schools’ ability in sustaining good outcomes over a number of years, in five areas: Academic Value-Added, Aesthetics, Sports, Uniformed Groups and Physical Fitness. Schools need to achieve an Achievement Award (AA, Level 1 award) in the same category over three consecutive years before they may be awarded the SAA.

The Best Practice Award (BPA) is a level 2 award and it recognises schools for their effective practices and systems that lead to good educational outcomes in both academic and non-academic areas. There are 4 categories of award for the BPA: Organisational Effectiveness, Student All-Round Development, Staff Well-Being, and Teaching and Learning.

The National Education (NE) Awards aim to encourage and recognise schools for their NE efforts. There are two levels of attainment for the NE Awards: the Development Award (level 1), i.e., DA (NE), and at the next higher level, the Outstanding Development Award (level 2), i.e., ODA (NE). The attainment of each level of award depends on how well a school meets the same set of evaluation criteria for both levels.

CHERISH is the acronym for CHampioning Efforts Resulting in Improved School
Health. The criteria for the CHERISH Award has been adopted from the World
Health Organisation’s Health Promoting School (HPS) initiative. It will be replacing the SAA Physical Fitness from 2010.

The Trim and Fit (TAF) Programme was implemented in 1992 in support of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The primary objectives are to reduce obesity and improve physical fitness among pupils. Schools are encouraged to adopt creative approaches to assist their pupils in achieving these objectives. The TAF Scheme Awards are presented annually to schools
